Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We place real focus on our own environmental and social performance, while also helping our customers to decarbonize.

Decarbonizing our business

Protecting the environment simply cannot wait, and so we’re actively exploring the best way to decarbonize our business as quickly and effectively as possible.

Progress we made

We have already made progress, cutting our Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 50% since 2019, largely by transitioning our operations to electricity from renewable sources in key countries, including Switzerland and China

Moving further

We’re also in the process of quantifying our Scope 3 emissions and intend to provide further updates on this

We are not stopping

Although we have achieved a lot, we’re not going to stop there, with plans to reduce emissions further, by 80% against our 2019 level by 2030

We’re taking tangible steps in this area, including transitioning the rest of our operations to green electricity and adopting CO2e-neutral district heat where feasible; moving the majority of our test center operations to greener fuels, such as biodiesel or green synthetic diesel; targeting CO2e neutrality at our factories in China and Switzerland by 2030, with a plan to expand project learnings to our other sites globally; and replacing our end of life company cars with electric vehicles.

Helping our customers operate more sustainably

Given the global need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we’re also helping our customers to decarbonize.

  • Our turbochargers create significant efficiencies: they increase power output and engine performance by up to 300%, while reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions by up to 10%, compared to an engine without any turbocharger
  • Our turbochargers also help enable the circular economy as more than 98% of their parts are recyclable

Marine customers

We are also developing turbochargers adapted to zero-carbon fuels, so we’ll continue to be vital to industries that can’t do without engines - including long-haul shipping. Here, battery powered propulsion simply isn’t an option, given the distances involved. As the sector is subject to the International Maritime Organization’s ambitious carbon reduction targets, turbocharged zero or lower carbon fuel powered engines are expected to gain importance in the near future and we will support this transition with our products.

Additionally, with growing reliance on renewable energy, the role of turbocharged engine-based backup generators to offset the resulting fluctuation in electricity supply is also expected to grow.

Doing the right thing socially

Social responsibility is equally important, and we have been continuously focused on improving our employee’s safety and wellbeing. This includes:

Injury reduction

We have achieved a 50% reduction of employee LTIFR* (Lost Time Incident Frequency Rate) to 0.45 per 200k hours worked in 2021 against our 2016 baseline

Training opportunities

Providing training opportunities to our teams globally

Diversity and inclusion

Our international employee base comprises 80 nationalities in 50 countries, and we are currently developing a diversity and inclusion strategy to make our organization more diverse

Ethical business remains a priority

We conduct rigorous checks on all our suppliers. For example, we’re implementing our own supplier code of conduct to make sure our suppliers are operating responsibly, and in accordance with our principles and values.

We support local communities

We actively support local communities around the world, with initiatives including donating of computers to rural schools in China; career seminars in India; providing technical training to nautical high schools in Italy; and work to raise awareness of sustainability and health in Ecuador.
